A reader of Learning to Dance in the Rain asked me this question – “I’m only a few chapters in but wondering – does the tone stay pretty heavy throughout or does it lighten up as she moves forward from the grief part?”

Shelby Wagner Response

I am curious what others might say regarding the above question. From my perspective it is a pretty emotional book and I don’t think I lightened up anywhere. I just wanted to warn people about romance scams and I thought perhaps readers would want to know how a 74-year-old woman was single and went on dating websites.

A little back story: My husband died in July of 2016 two weeks before our 50th wedding anniversary, my mother died in Feb. of 2017, the scam took place in April of 2017, and I began writing the book a year later. I was not going to tell anyone about the scam, but my daughter found out about it by accident. I was living with her at the time and she “grounded” me from using the internet for two weeks. So when I wrote the book in 2018, I was grieving about a lot of things and was very vulnerable.
